Esperanza Spalding wird als DIE Neuentdeckung der Jazzszene gefeiert. Dabei ist ihren Songs die Nähe zum Soul und Latin mindestens ebenbürtig. Die 24-jährige Amerikanerin aus Portland hat ihre Ausbildung am Berklee College in Boston absolviert und ist dort seit 2004 die jüngste Dozentin. Es passt alles zusammen, ihre Afro-Frisur a-la Angela Davis, ihr Aussehen, sie singt mit viel Talent, aber das wirklich außergewöhnliche ist: Sie spielt Kontrabass.
Der Weg nach Berklee war steinig und reich an Entbehrungen. Spalding stammt aus einer armen Familie und sie verdankte es einigen Freunden die heimlich ein Benefizkonzert für sie veranstalteten, dass sie sich das Flugticket von der West- an die Ostküste leisten konnte. Das Geld reichte weiterhin nicht und so musste sie - mit ihrem Kontrabass an dessen Case sie notdürftig ein paar Rollen anschraubte - täglich zwei Meilen bis zur nächsten Metrostation gehen. Der erste schneereiche Winter in Boston, eine kontinuierlich finanziell angespannte Situation - so überlegte sie sich nach dem ersten Semester alles hinzuschmeißen. Stattdessen ging sie zu einem Audit und wurde von Patti Austin zu einer Europatour engagiert.

Mittlerweile singt sie als Gastvokalistin bei Fourplay, der Billboard schreibt wohlmeinende Artikel über sie, sie spielte im Vorprogramm von Bill Cosby, der ihr einen Plattenvertrag besorgte und Gitarrist Pat Metheny bemerkte: "Ihre einmalige Qualität geht über ihre unglaublichen musikalischen Fähigkeiten hinaus. Sie hat diesen seltenen "X-Faktor", sie ist in der Lage ihre Visionen und ihre Energie transportieren zu können."

Ihre Debut CD spricht Menschen auch ohne besondere Affinität zur Jazz Musik an, ihre Eigenkompositionen auf "Esperanza" leben von den Melodien. Zu Bass, Piano, Drums und sorgsam gesetzten Gebläsetupfern singt Spalding zu energiegeladenen afro-südamerikanischen Rhythmen, jazzig verspielten Improvisationen oder angenehm akustischen Stimmungen.
In "Fall in" stellt sie ihren Upright Bass zur Seite, lediglich Leo Genovese am Piano und Esperanza Spalding am Gesang. "They say if you die in a dream you die in real life. Well I just died in your arms, lost in your eyes."
"Cuerpo Y Alma (Body and Soul) swingt locker und lässig. Spalding singt portugiesisch, ihre Finger klettern den Hals ihres Kontrabasses rauf und runter, sie scattet zu schnarrenden Bassläufen, das Pianosolo hinterläßt dich mittwippend.
Energiegeladen erzählt sie in "Before she got to you", dass sie reich wäre, wenn sie für jeden Moment in dem er sie mit den Augen ausgezogen hat einen Penny kriegen würde. "I know you wanted me too, before she got to you".
Mit "Precious" stellte sie sich mit dem einzigen poplastigen Track des Albums bei Letterman's Late night Show einem breiten Publikum vor. Ihr Singstil ist mehr Pop als Jazz, ihr Soul nimmt gefangen.
"I adore you" kommt im Bebop Stil eines Dizzy Gillespie. In "Mela" wird jazzig virtuos "genudelt".
Double Bass, die einzige Gitarre auf dem ganzen Album und Esperanzas Stimme zu portugiesischem Text - "Samba em Preludio" ist die zweite Fremdkomposition des Albums. Ein würdevoller, wenn auch melancholischer Ausklang einer CD die vor Energie und Musikalität vibriert.

"In preparing for this album, I worked really hard on my playing, my singing, my composition, everything," Esperanza Spalding says. "I'm confident and I'm proud of what came out. I feel like it represents me at this time, and it shows the world what I'm capable of."
"All of us had the same intentions in the studio. Everybody really gave everything we could give, because we really wanted it to be the best that it could possibly be. It was like a family affair. There are things on there that you'll dig if you're a jazz listener, and things you'll dig if you're not a jazz listener. That's the objective - to serve as many people as possible with the music."

About the Artist
Esperanza Spalding's accelerated backstory follows a breathtaking arc. A musical prodigy since her childhood in Portland, Oregon, Esperanza enrolled at Berklee College of Music at 16 and not only excelled there but eventually became the youngest professor in the school's history. Before finishing school, she had already landed coveted touring gigs and recording projects with the likes of Patti Austin, Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny and other luminaries who were, in many cases, the shining lights of their own generations.
