Seattle - At The 5th Avenue Theatre
|
 |
On a rather cold and crisp Seattle evening the temperature went down as the evening progressed. Things were just starting to heat-up inside the cozy and luxurious confines of the 5th Avenue Theatre located in downtown Seattle... ... Judging by the audiences response the highlight of the evening (definitely mine), was that this was the first time vocalist Phil Perry has ever played in Seattle.. Personally I became a fan of his when he first appeared on the old Arsenio Hall Show sitting in with Arsenio's band "The Posse." I immediately sought out all things with his name on it including the doo-wop group "The Montclairs" where he first started recording. When during the song "Malibu", Phil Perry nonchalantly walked out from behind the curtains and the stage shadows the crowd went wild! Wearing a cream colored suit and a signature hat -- his first notes drew shouts of adoration. Singing the songs off Lee's "Twist Of Motown" project -- "Tracks Of My Tears," "Just My Imagination," and as an encore off Lee's 1981's "Rit" recording the hit song "Is It You?" (originally sung by Eric Tagg) he was icing on the cake to a great show! .:Read more:.

Hey Everybody! Time to update yawl on what's going on
.
I've decided not to do the play at this time
so now I'm free to do more concerts and some writing with my old friend MAJIC, down in Texas . Collaboration is long overdue!
I'll also be doing some November dates here and there with my Capricorn Twin, Lee Ritenour, as well as the very talented Mr. Bob Baldwin, before a special December return to Blues Alley in Georgetown on the 12th and 13th.
Speaking of Lillian, she is busy trying to preserve and promote my Music Legacy
she took me way back - over 35 years, I believe
She is insisting that I include a Montclairs medley in my show.
The PHILILL Foundation - our own non-profit Foundation ... our first fund-raiser will be a formal holiday dinner cruise on Sunday evening December 21st, from 6 to 10 p.m. on a beautiful ship in the Marina Del Rey. I have asked some special guest artists - musicians, singers, and comedians- to come on board to help us bring in the Christmas spirit
Although she doesn't know it yet, I plan to make Lill sing, too! It's time for her to shine again
and her chops are better than ever!
Just come to www.philperry.net and reserve your spot. Everything you need to know will be there, but you can email us if you need more information .:read more:.

"10-17-03 - Phil Perry was the featured guest vocalist of the great smooth jazz sax man Eric Marienthal during a beautiful Saturday morning Jazz Brunch Cruise on the "Endless Dreams" ship, out of Long Beach, California. Eric hosted the three hour cruise sponsored by smooth jazz radio station The WAVE - 94.7 FM, as part of their "Jazz At Sea" series, and food was provided by the superb chefs at Spaghettini's Italian Restaurant. Besides Phil Perry, Eric asked Canadian saxman Warren Hill to join forces, and the boat was "rockin'"!!! Phil brought the house down with his own special rendention of The Theme to (the movie) TOOTSIE, written by the legendary Dave Grusin.
Phil was totally thrilled to be singing with Eric's band which included longtime musical friends Barnaby Finch (on keyboards) and bassist Melvin Lee Davis."
Melvin is an extraordinary bassist, working with Chaka Khan, Lee Ritenour, Mariah Carey, ... he released two awesome CD's of his own. Photographer - Carla Rhea of Image Creations Unlimited - captured the event and sent us some photos. She wrote ..."Phil was great! The Smooth Jazz Brunch Cruise was fantastic!...I really enjoyed myself".

Hey Everybody!
Thanks for the visit! I've been pretty busy lately rehearsing for two plays - "Will A Real Man Please Stand Up" and "Love In All The Wrong Faces" - while touring and doing the live music shows. It's keeping me on the move, but I'm very thankful for all the opportunities that are coming my way! When I can catch a breath, I've been writing when I'm at home...

Found an eMail review about the 5th Carlos Vega Memorial Birthday Concert @ La Ve Lee on Creatchy's website:
"Date: December 18th, 2002
An unannounced vocalist came up next, Phil Perry to sing a heartfeld rendition of "For The Love Of You" along with guest drummer Steve Ferrone sitting in along w/Rosemary Butler providing background vocals. I can't understand why Perry doesn't get played on smooth jazz stations or aired on their playlists period. What a pair of pipes this dude has. His range is high enough to bounce off satellites. Unbelievable sensce of control and power and not heard enough to the masses. He's as big as an ox and his voice makes up for his looks...
It was time for veteran session songtress Rosemary Butler to be featured. This blonde siren has worked w/James Taylor, Linda Rondstandt, Doobie Bros., and Jackson Browne. She did a nice rendition of the Motown classic, "Ooh Baby Baby" which Butler herself sang background on Ronstadt's hit recording of the same song. Butler still sings like an angel and Wison and Perry provided crisp background harmonies along w/solos from Williams and Fuller
.The set closed w/all the singers returning (Wilson, Butler, Scheff, Perry) plus Little Feat's Richie Hayward guesting in the drum chair for "What's Going On". Perry and Scheff traded off the first two choruses but it was mostly that dominated much of the song while Butler and Wilson sang the backgrounds. Perry showing off his vocal gymnastics in this number. Garfield and Williams showcased some fine solo choruses

Concert Review by Gloria Ellis and setlist:
"A Wave Of Peace-The Unity Concert," a free benefit sponsored by 94.7 (KTWV-FM) The Wave, a smooth jazz radio station, in remembrance of the tragedy that took place September 11, 2001. Many notable smooth jazz musicians as well as jazz vocalist were scheduled to perform to make this event the most memorable in the history of smooth jazz.
Sunday October 14th, A Wave Of Peace was held in Inglewood, at the Forum to benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. The Forum was filled to capacity given the fact that so many top smooth jazz artist of today, were contributing their time and talent for a noteworthy cause... Phil Perry, sang a very deep and compelling rendition of Lennon's, "Imagine," and followed with "Hey Jude" accompanied by his sisters and Brain Culbertson on piano...Stevie Wonder, vocalist, pianist, songwriter, producer, and recording artist was the surprise guest of the evening. Wonder just added more allurement to the event as he delivered a morsel of traditional jazz as well as his own "Ribbon In The Sky." In closing, all artists returned to the stage to participate in Marvin Gaye's, "What's Going On."

THE 4TH ANNUAL HIGH HOPES BENEFIT CONCERT
This year's High Hopes Benefit Concert was a winner! Sunday, July 14th was the date of our 4th annual High Hopes benefit concert and thanks to some very generous and talented people, it was another big success! High Hopes is a head injury recovery center in Tustin, California. It is a non-profit organization that helps people who have suffered traumatic brain injuries and helps them regain abilities thought to have been lost forever .... The concert was at the Hyatt Newporter Resort in Newport Beach, CA and every year the hotel donates their concert facility to us for the event. Each year I ask artists to come and sit in with my band and I and this year I was able to get both Patti Austin and Phil Perry not bad! Not only did they bring the house down, as everybody knew they would, but they donated their time to be there which was amazing...

Vocalist Phil Perry will perform several dates over the coming weeks. His current album, Magic, was released last year on the Peak Records label. Perry will be performing pieces from that album as well as selections from his previous four solo recordings. Several appearances will be made in tandem with fellow smooth jazz artist and labelmate Paul Taylor.
The outspoken performer, who revels in singing love songs, is realistic about the vagaries of the music business, including promoting his records to both fans and radio stations. Perry told us: "The only reason I get airplay now, ever, in any genre, is because of the relationships that I've developed with people in radio over the years, OK? I don't fit the mold of a star today. I'm 50 years old, I ain't got no hair on my head, the hair I got on my face is two, three different colors, you know what I mean? I've been doing this a long time. The only reason that anybody would play my music would be the relationships that we've been able to develop and the quality of music that they've got. And beyond that, there's not much I can do. All I can do is make myself accessible to the individuals that literally have my future in their hand, and I can try to treat people like I'd want to be treated."
Upcoming Phil Perry tour dates, featuring saxophonist Paul Taylor, are:
August 15 - Long Beach, CA - Long Beach Museum of Art
August 17 - Los Angeles, CA - City of Angels Church
August 20 - New York, NY - Jazz Cruise
August 21 - Detroit, MI - Chene Park
August 23 - Dayton, OH - Gilly's

Phil performed in a Benefit concert at the 14th with Eric Marienthal and Patti Austin in Newport Beach at the Newporter. He and Patti Austin engaged each other in a whistling contest. Phil is known for his whistle, and Patti is known for trying to outdo Phil. I'm not sure who won, but the audience was quite delighted.
