LEE RITENOUR - RIT SPECIAL (Pioneer), 75min - Laserdisc
Concert of Lee Ritenour taped in 1984. Despite the fact that this period doesn't belong to the best part of his work this disc offers some nice versions of "Dolpin Dreams", "Bahia Funk" and "Is It You" feat. Phil Perry. Band includes Ernie Watts, Carlos Vega and Jimmy Johnson. Sound quality is acceptable. If you are a Rit fan you won't care about these restrictions and go for the title, if you only want the best, choose the Coconut titles.

And Im not gonna say anything about Mr. Perry in the final song "Countdown". He's one of the best male singers in the world, and Im not just saying that. You know what? Just see it for yourself! |

LIVE FROM COCOANUT GROVE VOL. 1 and 2 - DVD
In a club named "Cocoanut Grove" Lee teams up with an incredible list of top fusion players. Backed by Harvey Mason on drums and Anthony Jackson on bass he is assisted by numerous musicians, most of them good friends like Ernie Watts, Bob James and Phil Perry. Brazil song with Joa Bosco included. The result is a delicious set of first rate smooth jazz...
Lee Ritenour & Friends - Live from the Coconut Grove was originally released as two laserdiscs (Volumes 1 & 2) in 1990. Both volumes have been combined into a single DVD disc. Lee plays a selection of very easy listening "smooth" or contemporary jazz songs/instrumentals accompanied by some "friends" (guest artists), including Phil Perry, Harvey Mason, Joao Bosco, Paulinho da Costa, Steve Lukather, Bob James, a.o.
The first four songs on Volume 1 are typically "smooth" or "fusion" guitar jazz, with Up-Town being distinctly more up-beat than the others. Phil Perry is the guest artist doing vocals on Harlequin and Malibu. The next four songs have a distinctly Brazilian or Latin feel about them, and feature Joao Bosco on guitar and vocals and Paulinho da Costa on percussion. Etude in particular features Paulinho performing on a bewildering variety of percussion instruments. Volume 1 ends with Steve Lukather engaging in a guitar duo with Lee on two songs that are more rock and pop inspired than jazzy...
Filmed in Los Angeles in 1990, the complete Live at the Cocoanut Grove will do nothing to alter indifference from jazz purists toward fusion guitarist Lee Ritenour. But hardcore Rit fans and other viewers without a jazz-pop ax to grind will find this concert a particularly stimulating, wonderfully textured musical event built around the star and a parade of International talent.
...Vocalist Phil Perry proves ubiquitous throughout the first half of the show, bringing loads of personality to an excellent cover of "Harlequin" and "Asa," the latter also goosed by strong guitar work from guest Steve Lukather. Bob James helps close the shop by coming 'round for late-evening performances of his "Restoration" and "Westchester Lady." From top to bottom, this is a pleasant, pleasurable entry in the Ritenour canon, though the uninitiated will find plenty to enjoy, too.

The stellar lineup includes the Grammy-winning vocalist Patti Austin, saxophone greats Ernie Watts and Sadao Watanabe, and percussionist Alex Acuna, as well as Grusin himself. Grusin has been a creative force in the music world for years and sports an impressive career history that includes 9 solo albums, participation in the acclaimed fusion ensemble Friendship, and the production and arrangement of many other albums, including a Grammy-winning record for Ernie Watts. The magic of improvisation shines through in this high-quality production as the group plays a selection of hits from throughout Grusin's career and ranging from African rhythms to contemporary jazz, creating an innovative and exhilarating experience of an uncommon ilk."
...On any recording that features guitarist Lee Ritenour at some point vocalist Phil Perry will find his way front and center at the mike, this time around on a track called Woman. Phils captivating voice delivers the warmth and sensitivity that youve come expect from his enchanting voice...
