The East St. Louis soul vocal group first recorded in 1969 and the following year they teamed up with Oliver Sain at his Archway studio. The groups members were Phil Perry, David Frye, George McLellan, Kevin Sanlin and Clifford 'Scotty' Williams.

Sainlin took the group to Paula Records in Shreveport, Louisiana. Here they had hits with 'Dreaming Out Of Season' ( R & B number 34) and 'Make Up For Lost Time' ( R & B number 46). Their last record for the label came in 1974 entitled 'Baby You Know (I'm Gonna Miss You)'. None of their singles ever even cracked the R&B Top 30, but such songs as "Prelude To A Heartbreak" and "Make Up For Lost Time" are still fondly remembered. |

The Montclairs left Paula and disbanded |
| 1980 |
Phil Perry teamed with Richard Sanlin in a duo ".: Perry & Sanlin :." that had a short stay at Capitol Records. Their first single stalled at number 81 and the album fizzled. |

When Capitol Records executives heard him sing at a Ritenour date at the Hollywood Bowl, they signed him again to the label for the acclaimed 1991 recording .: Heart of the Man :., which spawned the #1 R&B hit "Call Me," a cover of a classic Aretha Franklin tune.

Performances with Dave Koz, recording dates with Fourplay (on "Between the Sheets") and a vocal on GRP's The Benoit/Freeman Project increased Perry's popularity in smooth jazz circles and led to a deal with GRP. Phil's Solo Album ".: Pure Pleasure :." featuring the hit singles "If Only You Knew" and "Love Don't Love Nobody".
