Live aus Anaheim - südlich von L.A. erlebt man einen famos aufgelegten Ian Gillan in intimer Clubatmosphäre. Über Gillans Karriere muss man nicht viel Worte verlieren. Der Mann ist schon zu Lebzeiten eine Legende der Rockmusik. Gillan (geb. 1945) vermag stimmlich immer noch zu beeindrucken, barfüßig relaxed präsentiert er einen Querschnitt aus eher unbekanntem Material.

Die DVD verzichtet auf wilde Schnitte, transportiert viel vom Livefeeling und dem sichtlichen Spaß der Band.
"Into the fire" versetzt uns zurück ins Jahr 1970. Die LP "In Rock" katapultierte Deep Purple in den Rock Olymp.
In "No worries" greift Gillan wie in Deep Purples 70ern zur Mundharmonika. Die bodenständige Band spielt songdienlich, kein Saitennudler ;-) in Sicht. Im Gegensatz zu Deep Purple Touren tourte man gemeisam im Bus und saß sich ordentlich auf der Pelle. Die 10.000 Meilen Clubtour schweißte die Band zusammen, sie spielt "tight" und ohne unnötige Schnörkel.
"Wasted sunsets" und "Not responsible" aus Purples Perfect Strangers erscheinen zum ersten Mal auf einer Setliste eines Live-Gigs.
"Sugar plum" aus dem Album Gillans Inn rockt mit ordentlichem Druck. (Auf "Youtube" fand ich eine Live Aufnahme aus 2006 mit dem leider mittlerweile verstorbenen Gitarristen [Jeff Healey].)

"Hear me grieving, lying on the floor.

I'm a blind man, I'm a blind man and my world is pale.
When a blind man cries, Lord, you know, that ain't a sadder tale."
Der alte fast vergessene Purple Klassiker "When a blind man cries" ist sicherlich ein Highlight der DVD bzw. CD.
Auch wenn Gillan bei "Men of war" seine Stimmbänder ordentlich malträtiert vermag er für den Rest des Sets immer noch stimmlich zu überzeugen. Das unvermeidliche "Smoke on the water" hätte man getrost übergehen können. Dafür entschädigt "Knocking at your back door" als letzter Song.

The 2006 Gillan's Inn tour was a ten thousand mile pub crawl with band and crew living in one bus and which started in Buffalo New York on August 16, wound through the north east, mid west, through Canada, down the west coast, east, then north a bit, and ended September 21 in Medina, Minnesota.

Live In Anaheim catches us about three quarters of the way through the tour, give or take, and the band was tight as hell. Not only was it a treat for me to revisit some old GilIan band tracks and to put a new spin on some older Purple stuff as well, we also got to play a few songs that have never been played live before this tour, including "Wasted Sunsets" and "Not Responsible" from Purple's Perfect Strangers, and "Bluesy Blue Sea" from my Magic album.

So come on in, grab yourself a pint and crank up this f&#k off rock and roll disc, of which I am very proud to say is actually fully authorized and endorsed by yours truly, unlike much of the unauthorized crap you've been served over the years.
