"Hast du schon die neue CD im Player gehört, woher hast du die?" Meine Frau lässt sich eher selten zu spontanen Kommentaren hinreißen - zumal wir teilweise einen eher konträren Musikgeschmack haben - aber dieses Mal war der Enthusiamus in ihren Augen zu sehen.
Die weibliche Neugierde hatte gesiegt. Das CD Päckchen aus Madrid war schnell geöffnet und die CD in den Player geschoben. Schon der erste Song, die Ballade "A little thing called life" erhellt die vom tristen Januarhimmel getrübten Sinne.
"Woher ist die CD?" Das kleine aber feine Label Contante Y Sonante - bekannt für sein exzellentes CD Publishing - veröffentlichte im Rahmen seiner Songwriterseries Steve Dorff's "Original Demos". Wer Steve Dorff kennt weiß, dass dieser Titel nur als Understatement verstanden werden kann. Lediglich 1000 CDs werden in diesen Editionen gepresst - jede CD erhält ihre eigene Nummer, also ein ganz besonderes Sammlerstück in den Händen jedes Musik-Enthusiasten.

Die CD ist gefüllt mit 13 Kompositionen von Steve Dorff in Zusammenarbeit mit Linda Thompson, Milton Brown und Anderen. Steve übernimmt die Produktion, die Arrangements und den Pianopart. Das Album ist eine besondere Veröffentlichung von einem der besten Songwriter des Pop. "I just fall in love again" war ein Hit für die Carpenters und wurde von mindestens 50 anderen Künstlern gecovert. "A little thing called love" wurde von Aaron Neville gesungen. Auf den "Original Demos" übernimmt Warren Wiebe alle Leadvocals. "True love at last" war der letzte Song den Warren sang, bevor er sich im Oktober 1998 das Leben nahm. Diese CD ist ein Tribute für diesen Ausnahmesänger. Steve Dorff schreibt in den CD Credits:

"Ich hatte das Glück während meines Lebens und meiner Karriere mit einigen der talentiertesten Künstlern und Musikern zusammen arbeiten zu dürfen. Warren Wiebe war unter ihnen, leider ist er viel zu früh gegangen. Er war ein Genie, es war eine Freude mit ihm zusammen zu sein und es war ein großartiger Mensch - ich vermisse ihn."

Die Stimme von Warren Wiebe bringt uns den Himmel ein Stück näher. "I never stopped loving you" lediglich Stimme und Piano und eine leichte Brise Strings. "Kindred spirits" Warren Wiebe's eigener Lieblingssong. Die Songs sind sparsam instrumentiert, fokussieren auf das exzellente Songwriting. Sie glänzen alle einen Tick heller, nicht zuletzt dank Warrens' "berührender" Stimme.

Die "Original Demos" werden immer einen besonderen Platz in meiner CD Sammlung haben.

The female curiousness had won. The CD package from Madrid (Spain) was promptly opened and the CD found the way into the player. Already the first song the ballad "A little thing called life" brightened the dull January sky.

The tiny yet superb Label Contante & Sonante (Gabriel Raya) - famous for their excellent CD catalogue - published Steve Dorff's CD "Original Demos" in the context of their songwriter series. Whoever knows Steve Dorffs work, knows that this title can only be understood as an understatement. Only 1,000 CD were pressed in these editions, every CD has its own number, thus means it's a special collector's item in the hands of every music enthusiast.

The CD is filled with 13 compositions from Steve Dorff and different others Co Writers like Linda Thompson, Milton Brown and others. Steve produced, arranged and took over the pianopart. This album is a gem from one of the best songwriters in pop music. "I just wanna fall in love again" was a Hit for the Carpenters, Dusty Springfield and probably 50 more. Aaron Neville sung "A little thing called love". On the "Original Demos" Warren Wiebe took over the Leadvocals. "True love at last" was the last song he sung before he took his life in October 1998. The voice of Warren Wiebe brings us the sky a little nearer. "I never stopped loving you" simply Piano and voice and a soft breeze of strings. "Kindred spirits" Warren Wiebe's own favorite. The songs are thoroughly - bare to the bone - instrumented. The focus is the excellent songwriting. They shine a touch brighter not least because of Warrens touching voice.

The "Original Demos" will always have a very special place in my CD collection.
