Ich war wirklich gespannt als ich Anfang Juli ein Päckchen aus den USA in meiner Mailbox fand. Der Inhalt: Ohne Booklet, das Tracklisting auf Etikett gedruckt, jedoch mit Promomaterial - die neue CD "Full Circle" der Band "California Transit Authority", kurz "CTA". Der Grund für die notdürftige Ausstattung: Erst Anfang August 2007 soll die CD im Handel erhältlich sein, daher reichte es nicht für das Drumherum, aber schließlich zählt auch hier der bekannte Spruch: "Dont judge a book by its cover", auch wenn es in manchen Situationen etwas schwer fällt ;-)

Der
Bandname hat eine enge Beziehung zu Danny Seraphines
musikalischer Vergangenheit.
Seraphine war Schlagzeuger und Gründungsmitglied
der Band "Chicago", deren ursprünglicher
Bandname und erstes Album unter dem Namen "Chicago
Transit Authority" (CTA) veröffentlicht
wurde. Auf Druck der gleichnamigen örtlichen
Verkehrsbetriebe wurde der Bandname auf Chicago gekürzt.
Das Kürzel "CTA" fand nun Wiederverwendung
in Seraphines neuer Band, jedoch unter dem Bandnamen
"California Transit Authority".
1990 - nach 23 Jahren wurde Seraphine als Chicagos
Schlagzeuger - der viel zum Sound der Band beigetragen
hatte - ersetzt. Danach blieben die Schlagzeugstöcke
17 Jahre lang unangetastet bis er 2007 seine Muse
und die Affinität zum Chicagosound der 70er wieder
entdeckte. Neben Seraphine und Vocalist Larry Braggs
(Tower of Power) übernimmt Gitarrist Marc Bonilla
(Keith Emerson Band) einen wichtigen Part innerhalb
der CTA. Druckvoll tönen vier 70er Nummern von
Chicago im neuen - "up-to-date" Sound. Die
Neuinterpretation der Songs ist gelungen. Früher
im RockPop Sound mit Jazzanleihen liegt heute die
Prämisse in Richtung Gitarre. Fette Sounds, schnelle
Gitarrenläufe, als Gäste Alex Acuna und
Sheila E an den Percussions und Keith Emerson's (Emerson,
Lake and Palmer) B3 faucht im Orgelsolo von "I'm
a man". Seraphine hat nichts von seiner Power,
Präzision und seinem Timing eingebüßt.
Auch die neuen Tracks, allen voran "Mississippi
Delta Blues" und "South California Purples"
stehen den Klassikern in nichts nach. Larry Braggs
furioser Gesang verleiht den Songs eine frische Prise
(Brise) Soul. Bonilla meint:"CTA ist kein Nostalgie
Trip. Ich wollte nicht Mitglied einer Revival oder
Tribute Band sein. Deshalb wollten wir die frühen
Songs überarbeiten und in aktuellem Sound präsentieren."
Chicagos "Make me smile" wandelt sich zu
einer Instrumentalnummer in der Bonillas Gitarre die
Vokallinien übernimmt. Als Live Bonus Track "25
or 6 to 4" - einer der wohl bekanntesten Tracks
aus Chicagos Anfängen, bevor sie sich für
den Mainstream entschieden. Die Gebläseeinwürfe
des Originals werden von Keyboard und Gitarre übernommen.
Hier beweist CTA in eindrucksvoller Manier, dass sie
auch live zu überzeugen wissen. "Full Circle"
- eine Rock CD mit Pop, Jazz und Soulanleihen - nicht
nur für Freunde des frühen Chicagosounds
eine lohnenswerte Investition.

Tensely I opened the envelope I found in my mailbox. Content: A CD - without Booklet, the tracklisting on a selfprinted label, but with promo material - the new California Transit Authority (CTA) CD named "Full Circle". The cause of the provisionary layout: It'll take one more month before the CDs available. But finally the slogan "Don't judge a book by its cover" comes in mind even though in some special situations it feels difficult to follow ;-)

The Bands name "CTA" has a very special relation to the musical career of Danny Seraphine.
He was the drummer und founding member of "Chicago". Chicago's original name was "Chicago Transit Authority" (CTA). Under this name they published their first LP in 1969. Pressured by the similar named transport Company they shortened their name to "Chicago". The abbreviation "CTA" found its re-use in Seraphines new Band, fully written "California Transit Authority".
1990 - After being Chicagos drummer for 23 years Danny Seraphine was being replaced. The dust lay on the drumsticks for 17 years when he rediscovered his muse and his affinity to the Chicago Sound of the 70s. Beside Seraphine and Vocalist Larry Braggs (Tower of Power) guitarist Marc Bonilla (Keith Emerson Band) takes over an important part of CTA. Solid and rocking is the sound of four 70s Chicago tracks - up-to-date in production, instrumentation and sound. The reinterpretation is successful. Years before in the Rockpop Sound with Jazz "borrowings" the proposition now is the Guitar. Huge and fat sounds, fast guitarsprints, as guests Alex Acuna and Sheila E as percussionists and Keith Emersons (Emerson, Lake and Palmer) B3's hissing in the organsolo of "I'm a man". Seraphine lost nothing of his timing, power and precision. The new tracks, mostly "Mississippi Delta Blues" and "South California Purples" stay on the same eye level like the Chicago classics. Larry Braggs brilliant vocal work's illuminating some extra soulful shine to the tracks. Guitarist Marc Bonilla: "CTA isn't just a nostalgia trip. I wouldn't have been involved in it if it was a revival thing or tribute band. That's why we wanted to take those songs, the early ones and rework them, rearrange them and bring them up to date." Chicagos "Make me smile" transforms to an intrumental track in which Bonillas guitar takes over the vocal lines. As the Live bonus Track "25 or 6 to 4" - one of the most important Tracks of the Chicago catalogue. CTA demonstrates formidable that they are a first class live act.
"Full Circle" - a Rock CD with Pop, Jazz and Soul dabbers - not only for friends of the early Chicago sound a worthwile feast for your ears. |
