Bill
Champlin – sein Name ist untrennbar mit der Band Chicago
verbunden. Doch schon bevor er zu Chicago stieß war Champlin
mit seiner Band „Sons of Champlin“ eine feste musikalische
Größe in der kalifornischen Musikszene. Neben seiner
Arbeit mit Patti LaBelle, Lou Rawls, Elton John, Boz Scaggs, Donna
Summer, Nancy Wilson, George Benson, Jimmy Smith, Amy Grant, Neil
Diamond und vielen Anderen gewann er 1979 den Grammy für
„After the love has gone“ das später ein Hit für
Earth, Wind and Fire wurde.
Nach seinem Einstieg bei Chicago hörte man seine eigenwilligen
Vocals zum ersten Mal auf „16“ und den Songs „Hard
habit to break“ und „Stay the night“. 1988 veröffentlichte
Champlin sein erstes Soloalbum dem vier weitere in den 90ern folgte.
1997 nahm er mit den Toto Sängern Bobby Kimball und Joseph
Williams, sowie seinem Bandkollegen Jason Scheff als das Studioproject
„Westcoast All Stars“ Songs wie „How deep is your
love“ oder „Hotel California“ im A-Capella Format
auf.
Fast 13 Jahre musste die Musikwelt auf ein weiteres Soloalbum
von Bill Champlin warten. Im Oktober 2008 war es so weit. Die
Tracks von „No place left to fall“ waren via iTUNES
und AMAZON.COM downloadbar.
Ohne Cover und Liner Notes erhielt ich die CD direkt aus Kalifornien.
Mittlerweile steht fest, dass Zinkmusic den Vertrieb für
Europa übernimmt. Ab dem 10.12.2008 ist „No place“
auf CD mit einer „Making of“-DVD erhältlich.

"Total
Control" - mit B3 Hammondgetränktem Orgelsound startet
"No place left to fall". Bereits 1997 schrieb Bill Champlin
diesen Song zusammen mit Jay Graydon [JaR].
Die Originalversion war bedeutend langsamer mit Anleihen an Hall
& Oates. Alles live eingespielt, nur mit den notwendigsten
Overdubs spielt mittlerweile der Groove den wichtigsten Part.
"Straight ahead to kick off the album with a bang."
"Tuggin'
on your sleeve" der zweite und einer der besten Songs des
Albums. Anfangs eine instrumentale Zwiesprache zwischen Bill Champlins
B3 und [Will
Champlin] am Wurlitzer Piano. Auch die Vokalarbeit wechselt
zwischen Vater und Sohn bis sich der Song zu einem Familientreffen
entwickelt in dem sich Tamara Champlin die Lead Vocals und den
Chorus mit ihrem Ehemann Bill teilt.
"Der
Song war nie stimmig bis Tamara Champlin's Co-Schreiber George
Hawkins den Titelsong "No place left to fall" hörte.
Er hatte die Idee mit dem 1/8 Groove und spielte uns den Beat
mit seinen Händen vor. Es war einer dieser Momente als alle
wussten: "Wow, das ist es"."
"Lookin'
for you" mit fettem Backing Chor im Gospel vibe. Bruce Gaitsch
(Richard Marx) zeichnet sich für die Gitarrenarbeit verantwortlich,
Champlin glänzt an B3 Orgel, Piano und exzellenten Vocals
im kraftvollen Westcoast Feeling.

[Andreas
Carlsson] schrieb Hits für Rockstars wie Bon Jovi,
die Scorpions oder Kissgitarrist Paul Stanley - Countrystars
wie Carrie Underwood - Teenystars wie Duffy, Jesse McCartney
- deutsche Künstler wie Silbermond - Topacts wie Madonna,
Westlife, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears und unzählige
Andere - insgesamt 40 Hit Songs, 200 Millionen Alben, 150 Gold
und Platinplatten. Mit Bill Champlin saß Carlsson nach
1995 und "It's about time" zum zweiten Mal zusammen
und schrieb einen Song der in einem Atemzug mit den großen
Chicago Hits genannt werden kann: "Never been afraid".
Bill Champlin teilt sich die Leadvocals mit Michael English,
Champlin spielt Piano und B3, Bruce Gaitsch elektrische und
akustische Gitarre, kein geringerer als Toto Gitarrist Steve
Lukather steuert das Gitarrensolo und die Gitarrenlicks bei
und auch Champlins ehemaliger Chicago Sangeskollege Peter Cetera
unterstützt bei den Backing Vocals.
Diane
Warren schrieb für Chicagos Album #19 den Hit "Look
away". Bill Champlin änderte das hymnischen Arrangement
aus dem Jahre 1988 zu einem vorwiegend von akustischer Gitarre
getragenden Stück. Das elektrisierende Gitarrensolo übernimmt
Chicago Gitarrist Keith Howland.
Tracks
wie "Never let go" wiederum geschrieben mit Andreas
Carlsson und "Stone cold Hollywood" gesungen mit "Sons
of Champlin"-Kollege Jerry Lopez (die Fat City Horns übernehmen
das Gebläse) sind weitere Songs einer CD voller Ideen und
hochgradiger Musikalität.
Die DVD dokumentiert die Aufnahmesessions, den "No place
left to fall"-Jam, Champlins Gedanken über die Beatles
und Bob Dylan, ein Extra über seinen Sohn Will Champlin
und die Sons of Champlin live mit "Gold mine".
Ein
rundum gelungenes Paket für jeden Fan [intelligenter Pop/Rock-Musik].
