Die CD berührt zutiefst und man kann sich des Eindruckes nicht erwehren, dass Johnny Cash einen Blick in seine Seele preisgibt - "A hundred highways", das Vermächtnis eines Mannes im Angesicht des Todes. Schon nach dem ersten Song in dem er müde und mit brüchiger Stimme: Oh Lord help me walk another mile, just one more mile" singt steigt der Chillfaktor. Er war nie der große Sänger aber seine Stimme weckt Emotionen, schafft Nähe und Authentizität. Coverversionen von Bruce Springsteen, Gordon Lightfoots "If you could read my mind" und seine letzte Komposition "Like the 309" sind exzellentes Songmaterial. Kurzatmig singt er im "309" "Asthma's coming down like the 309". "It should be a while before I see Doctor Death, so it would sure be nice if I could get my breath," Im country-blues groove gnarzt er "Take me to the depot, put me to bed, blow an electric fan on my gnarly old head," "Everybody take a look, see I'm doin' fine, then load my box on the 309." Produzent Rick Rubin hat mit der American Recordings Reihe wesentlich zum Kultstatus des "Man in Black" beigetragen, es ist "Johnnys final statement".
