"Boy meets Girl" - the Songwriter Duo Shannon Rubicam and George Merill will forever be measured at their No.1 Hit "Waiting for a star to fall". But the other less famous songs carry the sound and the life sentiment of the 80s, too.
The Album starts with the single "Bring down the moon". "If loves not forever I need to discover the spirit of romance and magic in living from day to day".
"Boy meets girl" had written the hitsingles "How will I know" and "I wanna dance with somebody" for Whitney Houston. Track #2 "Waiting for a star to fall" was given to Whitneys Management, too. They declined it - I don't know why maybe it was too "Pop" and too less R'n'B - but anyway - the track was so good that he found his way to the top of the charts. Since 1988 this song is being played daily all over the world, people are humming and singing the chorus line "Waiting for a star to fall - And carry your heart into my arms, Thats where you belong, in my arms baby.." An earcatcher/earwig - par excellence.
The idea was born on a concert of Whitney Houston in the Greek Theater in Griffith Park, L.A. Shannon: Shannon: "It's a beautiful venue. It's an outdoor kind of amphitheater built on the Greek forum idea, and so it has an open air - no ceiling. Whitney had just finished playing How Will I Know."
George: "It was a big night for us. There we are in a crowd of 8,000 people standing on their feet cheering to one of our songs."
Shannon: "It was cool. At the end I looked up at the sky - because it was a clear night, the stars were out - and a star just shot across the sky just right through the middle of the dome. I just quickly jotted down a line, 'Waiting for a star to fall,' and stuffed it back in my purse. As we were driving home, I told George about it, and said, 'I think I'll write a lyric around that.' We thought, 'That's fortuitous, we got the idea at a Whitney concert, we should send it to Clive (Davis) for Whitney for her next album.' So we did, and he sent it back saying it wasn't what they were looking for because they were doing a little bit of a direction shift with her. So we thought, 'Well, we'll just do it ourselves, cool.' So it worked out fine for us to do it." [Source Songfacts.com]
In 2005 different Bands sampled the song "Waiting for a star" and brought it back to the top of the charts. Once more an evidence of the excellent songwriting. This song was the cause for Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin, Norah Jones, Whitney Houston, Phil Collins) undertaking the production of "reel life".
Shannon and George are sharing the lead vocals, sometimes even in one song, but the typical heavenly, sugary Chorus stands for the "Boy meets Girl" sound. Always with the sufficient distance to kitsch and frosting.
Another highlight "If you run". A catchy chorus, a guitarsound thru a talkbox entrapping to listen more precisely - a perfect pop song. Beside the danceable beats "Reel life" has its ballads like "Is anybody out there in love".
"Is anybody out there in love - Let me hear it from your heart - It's a great thing to be in love and be loved - Is anybody out there in love - I wanna know - Got to know." "Heavenly" Uuhs und Aahs and a catchy Chorus - characteristical Boy meets Girl sound.
"Reel life" tells about the ups and downs in a relationship. About infatuation "Bring down the moon" to seizing back of the freedom like in "No apologies".
"I don't want your shelter I'm breakin free - And right now this matters so much to me
You want to give me everything - Captivate me with a pretty ring
Love should be easy - This is what you say.
You treat me like the sweetest thing - But I know you're gonna clip my wings
No more romancing - No more carefree dancing
After you've made your claim you've made your claim
I want to break free - With no apologies"
When you love perfectly arranged and produced pop songs with a strong hook you're in good hands with Boy meets Girl's Reel life.
